Westport Overture is the ideal piece for the maturing high school band. Its strong opening polychordal statement sets the foundation for an exciting overture that sounds much more difficult than it is. Rich, complex harmonies lend it a sophisticated tone, while its rhythmic simplicity puts it well within the range of most young high school bands. The middle section is sensitive and lyrical, yet has no extreme range considerations or overly exposed parts.
