"Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord?)" is a traditional African-American spiritual from the 19th century, likely originating among enslaved people in the United States. First published in 1899, it is a profoundly emotional hymn, often sung during Lent and Good Friday to reflect on the crucifixion of Jesus. This version was developed from a lead sheet and features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We hope you like what we've done with this great old hymn!
