Composed by Traditional. Arranged by James-Michael Sellers. This edition: pdf. Holiday. 33 pages. JMS Composer #1459824. Published by JMS Composer (A0.1901595).

A bold and inventive overture treatment of the traditional carol Good King Wenceslas, arranged for flute choir. Scored for Piccolo (optional), Flutes 1–3, Alto Flute, and Bass Flute, this intermediate work runs approximately 5 minutes and is ideal for holiday and winter concert programming.

The piece opens in the brilliant clarity of G major, the piccolo alone before the flutes enter one by one — each voice carrying independent material rather than simply doubling, the texture building toward a full-ensemble drive. The melody is present from the start, but rhythmically displaced and layered across all voices in a way that gives the familiar tune forward momentum and energy.

When the B section arrives, the key shifts to Eb major — warmer, more relaxed, almost wistful — and the melody that was driving now breathes. The same tune becomes something different: spacious, song-like, lyrical. As the music moves into 3/4, the key drifts further to Db major, a sense of wandering far from home, the ensemble pulling back to something quiet and sustained. A full-ensemble fermata holds that stillness before G major snaps back into place — brilliant and immediate — and the opening energy returns. The recap builds to a full choir statement at ff and ends with a sharp stinger, a clean cutoff that leaves the room ringing.

Modal mixture throughout keeps the harmonic language alive and unpredictable, with accidentals woven consistently across all voices rather than appearing as occasional decoration.
