A rich and inventive overture treatment of the traditional carol Good King Wenceslas, arranged for clarinet choir. Scored for Clarinets 1–3, Alto Clarinet, and Bass Clarinet — all required — with an optional Eb Clarinet part, this intermediate work runs approximately 5 minutes and is ideal for holiday and winter concert programming.

The Eb clarinet leads the opening in the brilliant clarity of G major, the lower voices entering one by one until the full ensemble drives forward together — six independent lines, each doing something distinct. The melody is present from the first measures, but rhythmically displaced and layered in a way that gives it energy and forward momentum rather than simple presentation.

When the B section arrives, the key shifts to Eb major — one of the most natural and resonant keys for the clarinet family, warm and wistful where G major is bright and driving. The melody that was propulsive now settles into something lyrical and spacious. As the music moves into 3/4, the key drifts further to Db major — a sense of wandering, the ensemble pulling back to a quiet and sustained stillness far from where it started. A full-ensemble fermata holds that moment before G major returns with a snap, the brightness immediate and unmistakable. The recap builds through the full ensemble to a climactic ff statement and ends with a sharp stinger — a clean cutoff across all voices that lands with impact.

Modal mixture runs throughout, with accidentals woven consistently across all voices, giving the familiar carol a harmonic depth and restlessness that rewards attentive ears.
