Based upon the classic Christmas carol "Good King Wenceslas," composer Deborah Baker Monday takes us on a historical journey that depicts the story of how Wenceslas became the "good King." Deborah has created a stunning new piece that is dark and foreboding at the start, depicting the evil that was around during Wenceslas' time. But the goodness of the King wins out and the piece ends triumphantly as the carol is then brought to us as we know if: Good King Weneslas, the man that became a saint. This exceptionally fresh and different take on a popular Christmas song is perfect for your next holiday concert.
The name Wenceslas has become familiar over the centuries through the popular English carol, Good King Wenceslas. The text is based on Wenceslas I, the Duke of Bohemia, who lived in the early tenth century. His short life and death as a martyr gave him a reputation for heroic goodness. He was declared king even after his death and is now considered the patron saint of the Czech Republic. This selection is loosely drawn from musical motives of the English carol but in the key of E natural-minor. A dark tone is set as the somewhat familiar melody is stated. All instruments share the melodic interest as the piece becomes more and more turbulent. The music continues to grow with energy and turbulence as musical motives are traded between the high and low string sections. A huge return of the opening melody soars in the first violins as the music transforms into a joyous conclusion in G major. This dramatic work is easily accessible to first-year students. It brings the listener back to the time of Wenceslas I, his brief reign during these dark times and his rise to the beloved Good King, who is remembered in the popular holiday song. This is the perfect addition to any concert!
