Die Weihnachtshistorie by the Hamburg composer Thomas Selle (c. 1640) follows the same tradition as the better-known composition of the same name by Heinrich Schütz, although Selle's version is much shorter. In Selle’s Die Weihnachtshistorie there is no opening chorus and it ends with the Chorus of the Heavenly Hosts (Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe). Short instrumental sinfonias of varying instrumentation structure the composition, while its two colorful five-part choirs (vocal and instrumental) enable different instrumental and choral combinations. This varied composition combines well with Christmas motets and sacred concertos by Schütz, Hammerschmidt and others.
