This SATB score is suitable for choirs of all sizes. It offers a beautifully responsive choral setting of the contemporary hymn by the same name, originally written by Lisa Waites for the United Church of Canada's 45th General Council (2025). Composed for the youth service at General Council, Lisa organized the hymn around the new UCC Mission Statement, which is "Deep Spirituality, Bold Discipleship, and Daring Justice." Each of the three verses focuses on how to apply one of the three core themes from the mission statement, while the chorus reprises a practical call to live them all, for the health and growth of the church, the healing of the world, and the glory of God.
Filled with energetic rhythms, a catchy melody, and lyrics that unapologetically call the church to live out a Christocentric faith publicly, to be "doers of the Word, not merely hearers of it" (James 1:22), this contemporary anthem will inspire your congregation to a deeper, bolder, more daring expression of their faith.
Suitable for intermediate pianists and beginning/intermediate choirs of all sizes and ability levels (you can even omit the Tenor and Bass parts, if you only have Soprano and Alto voices in your choir, by moving the male parts up an octave, or by omitting the bass line, and having a few Alto voices cover the tenor line), this is a very versatile, musically flexible setting of the Waites hymn. It is also a beautiful setting of the piece, retaining the energy and singability of the original piece.
For churches that follow the liturgical calendar, this piece is suitable for the seasons of Epiphany, Easter, Pentecost, Ordinary Time, Creation Time, and Thanksgiving, and in individual services or sermon series where themes such as: missions/outreach, youth/young adults, discipleship, spiritual renewal/growth, or social justice are being featured. For churches that don't follow the liturgical year, this piece would be suitable for all Sundays, except Christmas and Holy Week.
This isn't just an anthem for the United Church; it is also suitable for ecumenical partners in other mainline, Catholic, and Evangelical traditions. The theology conveyed in this anthem is Trinitarian, Christocentric, focused on church renewal and our faithfulness/maturity AS followers of Jesus. It is celebratory, but it also sets a high bar, encouraging us to live our faith daily, in costly, deeply hospitable ways. The lyrics were primarily drawn from Scripture, using 1 Sam 3:7-11, Psalm 145, and Romans 8:12-21 as three foundational texts.
