The gospel hymn We Shall Overcome is considered one of the greatest anthems of the Civil Rights movement. While the song was made famous by Pete Seeger, We Shall Overcome can be attributed to the Highlander Folk School of Monteagle, Tennessee and the Charley Albert Tinley hymn, I’ll Overcome Some Day. Zilphia Horton, music and drama director of the Highlander Folk School from 1938 to 1956, taught the song to Seeger at the school. Pete Seeger, Joe Glazer, Joan Baez, and other prominent 1960s folksingers sang the song at protests, concerts, and festivals around the United States. Prominence of the song in the Civil Rights movement helped it gained notoriety and inspired modern organizers and protesters to conscript We Shall Overcome for their own causes.
