On Saturday, June 15, 1889, the Washington Post sponsored a ceremony to honor the student winners of a literary composition contest organized by the Washington Post Amateur Authors' Association. Among the events that drew a crowd of 25,000 was a concert by the U.S. Navy Band, then conducted by John Philip Sousa, "The March King." Frank Hatton, one of the Washington Post's owners, commissioned Sousa to compose a new march for the occasion. Sousa thus wrote the WASHINGTON POST MARCH.
