"Wandering amongst Giants" was my submission for the 2016 Matt Withers Australian Music Composition Competition.

I was intrigued and excited when I discovered that the inspiration for this work was to be Sue Needham’s image Forest as I live amongst the giant trees of the karri forest on the south coast of WA in the coastal town of Denmark.

Wandering Amongst Giants attempts to capture and portray some sense of that magnificent forest environment so similar to that seen in Sue’s work.

The work opens with a 4 bar intro featuring a ponderously cadenced minim bass line representing the towering Karri trees with the underlying Andante tempo signifying the relaxed walking pace of a wanderer moving through the forest trail.

The entrance of a complex melody signifies the thick tangle of undergrowth lining the trails and the persistence of the ever-present bird song. The Rondo like nature of it and the intros frequent return, reinforces the sometimes overwhelming presence of the forest as our wanderer continues along their way.

Moments of silence occur as our wanderer pauses to view some interesting flora or fauna.

Speaking of fauna, the next section uses a twist on a well-known guitar technique to mimic the rhythmic thump and echo of a group of Kangaroos as they leap and crash through the undergrowth and across the forest path to avoid the human wanderer.

After the disappearance of the kangaroos, our wanderer continues on their way before the lofty treetops suddenly come alive as a combination of tremolo and raked and sliding diminished chords represent the ever-changing gusts of wind agitating the branches and leaves high above.   

In the final section, the intro and melody return with a final twist or two as our wanderer makes their way out of the dark and sometime foreboding forest back in to a more welcoming open space.
