Waloyo Yamoni is the tenth and final number from Christopher Tin’s song cycle, The Drop that Contained the Sea. This cycle features ten songs, each in a different language from around the world. The theme surrounds the water cycle in nature and its continuous journey through the skies, earth, and sea. There is a seven-note motif that is heard throughout the cycle (heard in measure 9 of the euphonium solo). The title comes from a Sufi concert that just as a drop of water contains the essence of the entire ocean, inside every human being is the essence of all humanity.

“Waloyo Yamoni” translates to “We Overcome the Wind” from Lango, a language spoken in the Northern Region of Uganda. This song is about rain as the water completes its journey. The original text comes from an East African rainmaking prayer. The song was written for a full orchestra with choir and features several soloists and percussion instruments.

This arrangement takes the original and rescores it for a modern-day Wind Ensemble. The key is adjusted to better fit a band’s performance. It features several percussion instruments from around the world. The Udu drum is featured prominently in the middle and ending sections of this. Christopher Tin suggests one with an extra skin head in his original orchestration. It is also recommended that it be mic’d. If an udu is not available, it can be substituted with a talking drum. The singing bowls may be substituted with hitting individual bells on a bell tree.
