Im Mittelpunkt dieser weihnachtlichen Komposition steht der Choral "Vom Himmel hoch", dessen Verse in der Reihenfolge vertauscht sind und so dem Ablauf der Weihnachtsgeschichte nach dem Evangelisten Lukas (2, Vers 1-20) angepasst wurden. An zwei Stellen wird je ein Choral in der Art des Quodlibets eingefügt. Choral und Weihnachtsgeschichte verteilen sich über drei Teile, die jeweils durch eine Sonate eingeleitet werden.
