Composed by Robert Chamberlin. Contemporary. Score and parts. 12 pages. Robert Chamberlin #4628013. Published by Robert Chamberlin (A0.917243).Vocalise for Soprano, Tuba, and Piano explores range and tonal color differences by pairing a soprano voice with a tuba. The piano accompaniment provides a flowing, repetitive backdrop for the two soloists. Imitative counterpoint adds interest to the score. The first performance of Vocalise featured a soprano who was also able to play the tuba part. The tuba part is included with the full score.

The notion of combining the colors of the soprano voice and tuba was (to the best of this writers knowledge) first explored by Rodger Vaughan with his work Three Songs for Soprano and Tuba, a work which utilized lyrics by John Updike, and a later work titled Have You Ever? Six Songs for Soprano and Tuba. Robert Chamberlins Vocalise offers a different approach to Vaughans offerings in this work. This work, which is without lyrics, explores the contrasting colors of the voice and the tuba, casting the piano in the role of providing connective tissue, allowing both performers to be freed from being cast as an accompaniment. The general demeanor of the work is more serious in nature than the Vaughan works, which are more to the lighter side in intent. This work presents the opportunity for an interesting color contrast for any recital that features either the soprano voice or the tuba as the central focus.
