Composed by John Stepan Zamecnik. Arranged by William Dick, Kiyoshi Tamagawa. 20th Century,Concert,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 94 pages. Mastery for Strings Press #5946377. Published by Mastery for Strings Press (A0.945463).

John Stepan Zamecnik (1872-1953) enjoyed a substantial career as a silent film music composer, culminating in his scoring the motion picture Wings in 1927, which won the first Academy Award for Best Picture. He was also an accomplished violinist. These twelve short pieces for violin and piano originally appeared in 1922 as "Violin Compositions in the First Position, Vol. 1," published by the Sam Fox Publishing Company. Created for teaching purposes, they are much more than études or exercises-they are melodic miniatures that capture various moods, rhythms and styles with as much charm as Zamecnik’s best film music. They provide fresh and engaging concert repertoire for emerging string players, both as solos and string ensemble pieces. It is with these purposes in mind that the current edition including an optional second string part has been created.

Zingara

A Quaint Story

Swing Song

May Flowers

At Eventide

Polish Dance

A Russian Lullaby

Yester Dreams

A versatile collection!
When Dr. Tamagawa approached me to collaborate in the production of this book I was enthusiastic. I had first become aware of the original Zamecnik Violin Compositions in the first position over thirty years ago. I have used them ever since as supplemental repertoire for students who had advanced to the book four level of the Suzuki Method. I assigned them to develop expressiveness in the bow arm. Each of the pieces is a little vignette that suggests and requires that the bow arm develops skill in portraying a mood, a rhythmic lilt, or national image. Each piece is a convincing tone poem; not surprising since Mr, Zamecnik was a prolific composer of music to accompany silent movies. I found this original volume a very effective assignment for expanding a student bow arm that was proficient in the baroque style of bowing to a bow arm capable of legato tectonic that could easily move into the romantic style of DeBeriot and other similar composers.
