Musically, this is inspired by the ancient church tradition, using voices pitched a perfect fifth apart from one another and moving in parallel. Here, perfect fifths are stacked: Sopranos and Altos a perfect fifth apart and Tenors and Basses likewise, but often with different tonal centres. This creates occasional dissonance, but the tonality is clear throughout. Meanwhile, the rhythms evoke an irregular dance-like celebratory atmosphere.
