Composed in 2024, Variazioni sulla sete del cuore (Variations on the Thirst of the Heart) by Guido Umberto Sacco for piano is based on a liturgical song inspired by Psalm 42. This melody has a long history: it appears in Schumann’s Album for the Young, Op. 68 (Chorale and Figured Chorale), in J. S. Bach’s cantata Meine Seufzer, meine Tränen (BWV 13), and is known in Italian as Quanta sete nel mio cuore.
The use of an unaltered cantus firmus around which harmonic, rhythmic, and contrapuntal variations unfold draws on the earliest roots of polyphony and resonates with Bach’s cantatas and Zelenka’s masses.
The twelve variations range from metrically suspended settings where the melody seems to “float” above contrasting accompaniments, to canonic writing (vars. 2 and 9), to timbral evocations such as a carillon (var. 4) or the incisive sound of crumhorns (var. 7), and to the dramatic var. 8, which musically depicts the mockery described in the Psalm. The work also weaves in modern influences, from jazz to progressive rock, alongside the classical European tradition.
The Prologue presents the theme chorally before it disintegrates into fragments, while only at the very end does the melody reappear in its original form, like the simple song of a praying community. The performer is invited to bring out both structural rigor and expressive variety, with discipline but also with “a touch of irony,” so that the piece comes across as “fresh and colorful”

Composte nel 2024, le Variazioni sulla sete del cuore di Guido Umberto Sacco per pianoforte prendono spunto da un canto liturgico ispirato al Salmo 42. Questa melodia ha una lunga storia: appare nell’Album per la gioventù di Schumann, Op. 68 (Corale e Corale figurato), nella cantata Meine Seufzer, meine Tränen (BWV 13) di J. S. Bach, ed è conosciuta in italiano come Quanta sete nel mio cuore.
L’uso di un cantus firmus immutato, attorno al quale si sviluppano variazioni armoniche, ritmiche e contrappuntistiche, affonda le radici nelle origini della polifonia e trova risonanze nelle cantate di Bach e nelle messe di Zelenka. Le dodici variazioni spaziano da soluzioni metriche sospese, in cui la melodia sembra “galleggiare” sugli accompagnamenti, a scritture canoniche (var. 2 e 9), a evocazioni timbriche come il carillon (var. 4) o i cromorni (var. 7), fino alla drammaticità della var. 8, che traduce musicalmente lo scherno descritto nel Salmo. Non mancano riferimenti a linguaggi moderni, dal jazz al progressive rock, intrecciati con la tradizione colta occidentale.
Il Prologo presenta subito il tema in forma corale, che si frantuma in frammenti, mentre solo alla fine ricompare nella sua veste originaria, come il canto semplice di una comunità orante. L’interprete è chiamato a far emergere tanto il rigore strutturale quanto la varietà espressiva, con disciplina ma anche con “un pizzico di ironia”, affinché il brano risulti “fresco e colorato”.
