These variations are built upon the original flute quartet arrangement of this old hymn (also available on this site), starting with a sort of canon leading into the tune and, for a second verse, giving the tune to the lowest instrument. The harmonies include a curious reference to the old "English cadence" effect, like  yearning sigh. The piece then ends with a repeat of the quasi-canon followed by a brief suspension.The pdf contains score and parts and the sound sample is an electronic preview.
