Variations on Edward Hopper is a series of 16 solo piano works inspired by the paintings of American visual artist Edward Hopper. One of the main themes in Hopper’s work is solitude in large urban centers, evoked with a melancholic air. The music, in turn, seeks to echo this atmosphere, creating moments of suspension where late Romanticism predominates, in dialogue with the proposed melancholy. It also makes use of ostinatos and musical language elements present in American music of the time, especially minimalism and, at times, jazz.
The work was dedicated to pianist Fabio Martino, who showed great affinity with the musical language, amplifying the atmospheres suggested by the music in his interpretation. With impressive dynamic control, he sustains the character of the pieces with delicacy, without sacrificing intensity. The music remains in suspension, upheld by the enchanted sonority that Fabio is capable of producing at the piano.
