This set of variations was commissioned and premiered by Dr. Linda Bailey, who has a passion for the E-flat flute. Though composed with the “E-fer” in mind, it can, of course, be played on any flute. The written range is from low middle C to A3. Mostly in the key of (fingered) F Major, there are brief forays into d minor, D Major, G Major, and C Major. Total play time is about 7 minutes.
The theme is slow and very simple. Var. 1 adds gracenotes. Var. 2 is an interval workout "con fuoco". Var. 3 is pesante and darker. Var. 4 Allegro is homage to J. Anderson (Op. 15 No. 3). Var. 5 is key clicks, pitch bending, fluttertongue, and air sounds. Var. 6 is presto in an irregular meter (2-3-2-2). Var. 7 is an Irish reel. Var. 8 cadenza rubato. The coda finishes with a revisit to the reel, "with reckless abandon."
