Published by Michelle Mooney (A0.1559470).Lilting, charming and playful, this waltz, also called Vals Brilliante, was written by Barrios as the fourth of a group of four waltzes contained under the upus 8 classification. One of only three of Barrios' works which carry an opus number, opus 8, with its four waltzes, is one of his most popular works.
Vals no. 4 was first published in 1952, but is believed to have been composed on or before 1923. Containing sections ranging in mood and style from peacocking strut, to lushly romantic, to the sweeping, whirling cyclonic campanella section and back to a repris of the earlier sections before the extravagantly glorious finish this waltz is supremely satisfying to play.
A 6th string dropped D tuning works best for this piece, and the whole is carefully edited with relevant performance directions and guitar tablature to make it as easy as possible to negotiate through the many position shifts.
