I have always loved James Agee's Sure on this shining night and the musical settings by Morten Lauridsen and Samuel Barber. Kate Rusby's beautiful and evocative Underneath the stars captures the same sense of spacial awe in a very personal and moving way. I have tried to retain the character of the guitar accompaniment in the piano part whilst harmonising the melodic lines with harmonies that sparkle with the colour of Lauridsen's setting. I have also retained the original key for the first two verses before modulating to G for the final two stanzas. This enables a tonal crescendo and ensures that the melody is shared amongst the top three vocal parts. I hope Kate will approve!
