This an unconventional arrangement of the traditional Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts". The song is acually a rearrangement of Nick Kirby's unpublished brass quintet titled "Fantasy on a Shaker Hymn". While the brass quintet provides a brighter, more fanfare-like presentation of the song, the inclusion of woodwinds in the mixed woodwind/brass quintet affords the opportunity for contrasting textures and dynamics characteristic of Shaker communities. The song opens with a solemn trumpet solo and proceeds into a variety of unconventional renditions of Simple Gifts, including themes that may even make you think of Pirates of the Caribean.
The song is difficult, in the sense that tempo changes are many and sometimes complex. However, it is very doable for the experienced musician.
