Una Furtiva Lagrima (from L'Elisir d'Amore) by Gaetano Donizetti Flute Choir - Digital Sheet Music

By Gaetano Donizetti

Donizetti’s opera “L’Elisir d’Amore” (“The Elixir of Love”) premiered on May 12, 1832 at the Teatro della Canobbiana in Milan and has enjoyed continual popularity in the standard opera repertoire since. It tells the story of the peasant Nemorino and the woman he loves, the wealthy Adina, and the comedy of errors that get her engaged to the wrong man. Nemorino sings this aria (“A Furtive Tear”) in the second act when he thinks he has lost Adina but a tear he saw on her cheek means that she does love him after all. Slow and pensive, the piece runs about 3 minutes. After a short introduction, the spotlight shines on the basses for the first verse, then on the piccolo for the second verse and brief cadenza.
