This edition relies on more commonly used band instruments, plus some added parts and clearer articulation markings. The instrumentation lends itself to the sounds associated with silent films, scary stories, and the orchestrion (an automated musical machine that used paper rolls to play the piano, pipes/organ, mallet instruments, and percussion).

George Linus was a prolific composer of 135 instrumental compositions and 80 ragtime songs. In addition, Cobb was also a columnist for Melody magazine, published by Walter Jacobs Inc, who was also his major publisher for his compositions. As a master Tin Pan Alley composer, he wrote many very popular songs and also some odd but interesting novelty pieces like "Umpah! Umpah!" which were more adventurous and clever. Cobb’s compositions were mainly purchased as parlor salon sheet music for home piano musicians. While his novelty works never sold in large numbers, his memorably simple melodies were his compositions’ greatest strength.
