These two contemplative pieces from the American appalachian tradition were arranged for Lent, penitential services and prayer services during Holy Week.
The classic hymn "Jesus Walked This Lonesome Valley" is beloved for its thoughtful lyrics and soulful tune. The lyrics describe spiritual strength required by Jesus to withstand his period of testing in the desert.
Inspired by the late composer, Charles Callahan, the author of this arrangement chose to set the piece as a fantasia in the style that he loved. The poignant melody is highlighted and echoed in different keys throughout the setting. The overall tone is reflective and prayerful.
The second piece in this collection, "What Wondrous Love Is This," is a companion piece to the first, also from the American folk hymn repertoire. This Dorian melody is set with lush harmonies, using quartal and jazz harmony. Sure to evoke emotions of gratitude and trust.
