Francis of Assisi was an Italian mystic and Catholic friar who founded the religious order of the Franciscans. He was inspired to lead a life of extreme poverty as an itinerant preacher: he eventually became blind. So I made his music sad. He himself did compose and sing. Francis is associated with patronage of animals, and is often depicted surrounded by them. Hence the bird song effect.
