Dr. Brumby has used two hymn tunes as the basis for these simple SATB Easter anthems. The texts are by the composer; the first is a paraphrase of John 20:1-16 and the second is entirely original. In the first anthem, a minor mode setting of a traditional melody highlights the dialogue between the angels and the women at the tomb on Easter morning. It continues with the tender meeting of the risen Savior with Mary Magdalene. The second anthem uses the melody Deo gracias (Agincourt) with an original text, concluding with rhythmic Alleluias. Both anthems are quite comfortable in their range and style. They have brief organ introductions, with the organ then doubling voice parts, but could easily be sung a cappella if desired.
