Twenty Contemporary Excursions Solos, duos and ensembles for recorders Discovery – Creativity - Recreation These works were originally written for soprano recorders but they may be played on F recorders using C fingerings. In many cases, the same piece may be played as a solo, duet or ensemble. These pieces may be included in the normal teaching program and are also perfect for workshops where players may have very different levels and experience. While these duets are musically satisfying in themselves, they also are etudes which will introduce the players to various techniques encountered in contemporary repertoire. Without being extremely complex technically, they provide challenges in their concept and approach to musicality. They can be played as written, or they may be modified by the teacher and/or performer. Although the compositional details are important, they may be bent with musical taste. For example, they may be extended by inserting improvisations based on the musical material; or several movements may be played at the same time. Of course, pieces may be assembled into suites. Feel free to try different tempos, changing tempos, different dynamics, and different methods of sound production, even playing silently. The spatial dimensions of the performance area(s) may also be exploited; try playing some of these using internet, or sitting on two mountaintops. These pieces may also be appropriate for use in dance, theater, art, poetry, video, sports etc. When no tempo is indicated the speed of the notes is flexible and variable. Thirty-second notes are very rapid, sixteenth notes are rapid, eighth notes are moderate, quarter notes are relatively slow, half notes are slower and whole notes are very slow. This is all within a flexible framework. For example, within the same piece different 16th notes may be played at different speeds from less rapid to more rapid. If the performer feels the musical need, from time to time a speed indication may be completely altered. (see Mobiles 1 - 3 for example) Specific performance notes appear at the end of the score.
