Twelve Dances for Recorder Trio
for two soprano recorders, and alto (or tenor) recorder.
These twelve dance melodies are taken from John Playford's The English Dancing Master, a seminal collection of 17th-century English country dance tunes and instructions for the dances. The book had at least 18 editions between 1651 and 1728. It contains 535 tunes and their variants across 18 editions, featuring popular melodies of the era. These tunes, often lively and melodic, were used for social dances.
*A 'maggot' is an archaic term for a 17th or early 18th-century English country dance tune, typically characterized by a light, catchy, and often whimsical melody. It is most commonly associated with English Country Dancing. The Dancing Master contains roughly 40 of these tunes.
