The work is largely inspired by the idea of a protagonist attempting to cross a turbulent river. The current is forceful to the point that he is holding on for his life.
Both the head and each solo feature the form "A-B-A-solo break." A soloist takes the break only if he plans to solo for the next chorus. In the last solo, the drummer takes the break into the head out, or launches into an extended out-of-time solo, which then leads to the head out. The head out utilizes the coda.
