Published by Antonio Gervasoni (A0.1897962).The piece follows the typical three movement scheme, with a slow movement in the middle. To fit the theme I chose, I related each movement to a milestone in San Martín's campaign: his arrival by sea, his vision of the future of our country (attested to in many documents and popular myths, such as the supposed dream in which saw our flag), and the historic moment in which he proclaimed our independence from the kingdom of Spain to a cheering crowd.
As a source of inspiration, I chose three texts: a poem by César Vallejo, which speaks of a rough sea, a fragment of a short story by Abraham Valdelomar, entitled "San Martín's Dream", and a text by San Martín himself, part from a letter he sent to Lima from Chile in 1818, three years before arriving on our shores. However, there is no real program in the music. As I have done in other pieces, these texts simply function as a kind of guide, a way to stay focused on the chosen subject and also a source from which to draw ideas, especially when I find myself in a block.
Despite the tumultuous situation that Peru is going through at the moment I write these lines, I share the dream of San Martín, as described by Valdelomar in his story. I think it's exactly what he envisioned, and while it hasn't come to fruition the way he thought, I'm hopeful that it eventually will.
