Grieg wrote many “Lyric Pieces” for piano and “March of the Dwarfs” is one of the most well-known. The piece is aprox 3 ½ minutes, with a rousing “march” at the beginning and end. In the middle is a gentle quieter moment with a repeated melody. The march gives your low flutes an opportunity to shine as the “drum” beating out the steps. In contrast, I gave the melody in the middle section to the piccolo as an opportunity to demonstrate that piccolos can be sweet.
This piece would be a fun addition to a concert program and is not difficult. Appropriate for community as well as professional groups.
