I love impressionism. And since the number of original compositions from that era including classical guitar can be counted on the fingers of one hand, one has to transcribe...
Ravels "Trois Chansons" date from the beginning of World War I, and they reflect his change in mind from ardent patriotism to doubtful and desperate realism, the latter to be found esp. in many parts of the accompaniment (empty fifths, long notes).
Compared to arranging Faure's "Au bord de l'eau", the Ravel piece was not as easy to adapt to the guitars expressiveness. The accompanying instrument often has to provide a quiet, but not silent sound carpet. I tried to achieve this with an adequate fingering which makes learning the piece a bit more ambitious, but I think it is worth the effort and delivers the desired outcome. There are some leaps across the fretboard as well as bar chords across several bars accompanied by two-voiced melodies which are nice challenges for the guitarist while trying to provide a flowing background to the singers wonderful melody.
In need for pitching the register down from the original mezzo to alto, the key is now d minor instead the original f minor. The guitar has to be tuned to drop D (lowering the E6 a whole tone).
Duration: ca. 2'30"
The PDF includes the score and parts for vocal and guitar (score & tab)
