In this work, the oboe is not merely a lyrical instrument, but above all a bearer of emotion — at times singing, yet at other moments raw and inescapably present. It is not a reflection upon grief from a distance, but a direct confrontation with it. The work was composed by Annemieke Lustenhouwer.
The composition is characterized by an alternation between a flowing melodic line and more turbulent expression. At first, sound and emotion unfold gradually in a lyrical line in the oboe. Yet before long, the music breathes towards a climax in which the oboe seems to cry out in pain, after which it momentarily recedes into the principal theme. However, after only a few moments, the music returns once more to pain. The piano supports this expression through low bass tones, while agitation is conveyed through the wide intervals in the oboe. Each time the music returns to the main theme, the piano sustains the underlying unrest by reverting to a pattern of broken chords.
