The Trio in C was commissioned by Kevin Vigneau and Kimberley Fredenburgh with support from the University of New Mexico, and the UNM College of Fine Arts. It was premiered on November 22, 2013, in Rio de Janeiro. It starts with an Allegro Impetuoso, in a fiery and fast tempo, where the melody is based on a 4 notes motif, while the eighteenth-notes are the pulsating force carrying the movement. It is followed by an Adagio molto, a Fugue where both subject and countersubject are built upon mordents. An interlude (Lento dolcissimo) uses a melodic idea from Gustav Mahler. The following section, “Largo soave” is yet another fantasy of a fugue where the subject’s appearances take place in both upper and descending fifths, thus covering the 12 transpositions. The final Coda starts on the C tonic, when the ‘dolcissimo’ theme is played by the oboe, while the viola plays a variation of the initial subject for the allegro. The mordents are now heard on the piano accompaniment. The piece ends in C, within very soft dynamics.
