Trio was composed in memory of the distinguished musicologist and Berio expert David Osmond-Smith, who I worked with as a colleague at Sussex University for a time until his death in May 2007. I used to teach nineteenth century composition styles at Sussex, and once had an interesting conversation with David in which he put me on to the harmonic and polyphonic subtleties of Brahms' Intermezzos - an inspiring discovery for me. I tried to capture some harmonic and polyphonic subtlety in this short work.
