This scintillating work was written as a tribute to the jazz musicians of the New Orleans, Dixieland and Chicago styles of the 20s and 30s. It consists of an opening swing section in true Dixieland style, followed by a sleazy blues section. Ideally the band should be divided so there is a separate Dixieland band consisting of trumpet, clarinet, alto or tenor saxophone, trombone, banjo (optional) and tuba or double bass. Although the Dixieland band are mostly accompanied by the remainder of the concert band the accompanying players also get the chance to shine as every now and again they take over the musical themes.

Tribute to Dixie is een eerbetoon aan jazzmuzikanten uit de jaren twintig en dertig. De compositie bestaat uit een swinggedeelte in de typische dixielandstijl en een gedeelte in een traditioneel bluesschema. Een dixielandband- bestaande uit een trompet, klarinet, alt- of tenorsaxofoon, trombone, (eventueel) banjo, en een tuba of contrabas - zorgt voor de juiste klankkleur en stijl. Het blaasorkest neemt de muzikale thema’s nu en dan over en zorgt voorbegeleiding op de achtergrond. Het werk is geschikt voor meerdere solisten binnen een blaasorkest. Succes gegarandeerd en geen improvisatietechniek vereist!

Tribute to Dixie ist eine Hommage an die Jazzmusiker des New Orleans-, Dixieland- und Chicago-Stils der frühen zwanziger und dreißiger Jahre. Das Stück besteht aus einem Swingteil, der in der typischen Dixielandphrasierung zu spielen ist, und einem Blues im traditionellen 12-Takte-Schema. Eine Dixielandband sorgt für die passende Klangfarbe und den Stil dieser Musik. Tribute to Dixie eignet sich hervorragend für die Präsentation mehrerer Solisten eines Blasorchesters.
