Tra quattro mura (Within Four Walls) op. 5 by Caterina Barontini is a rhapsody-like piano composition in one movement. Through the unfolding of its internal sections, the work seeks to lead the listener into a musical re-creation of the mental and emotional state of someone confined to a room for an indefinite time. The Author conceived and composed this work during the 2020 lockdown.

This piece opens in a questioning, suspended atmosphere, characterized by a high-register ostinato that evokes the passing of time with a smouldering, uncertain, almost unreal sound.
Simultaneously, in the middle-low register, a melody of hope and gratitude appears: a Beethovenian fragment taken from Canzona di ringraziamento offerta alla divinità da un guarito in modo lidio (the third movement of his String Quartet No. 15 in A minor). This motif stands out for its crystal-clear, simple, trusting tone and for the initial impulse of an ascending major sixth. Although several other themes appear throughout, this motif forms the core of the composition and is presented many times in different contexts.

The work closes with a perpetuum mobile that conveys the restlessness proper to someone who has been alone and closed in their thoughts for too long. Its chromatic ostinato derives from the opening figure through diminution. This final episode is a crescendo of tension until time mysteriously begins to slow down, giving way to an ending filled with peace, sealed once again by the Beethovenian motif.
The Author ultimately seems to suggest that, after craving has reached its culmination, a hopeful attitude can open a renewed mindset – one that aspires to a deeper connection with reality, towards a future full of light.
