This is an original work for British Brass Band. It was written by me when I was a student of the late, great Frank Hughes. We both started on the same idea, (stated at the start) and bent it to our will. I didn't really expect it to develop as it did, but I am pleased with the outcome. It's a 15 minute piece in four movements with fancy titles, more-or-less vaguely tied to the overall title.

1. Marcia (March)
This is a bright and cheerful concert march, based on the initial motif. The middle section, corresponding to a trio has a smooth cantabile melody first stated by the euphonium. There's the standard DC, followed by a short coda which alters the mood to prepare for the 2nd movement.
2. Pax Minimus (The littlest peace)
Thius movement represents an inner peace that is tainted with a sadness, perhaps at the loss of a loved one. The melodic line developed naturally out of the original motif.
3. Rex Via (King of the Road)
A complete change of mood, now as the King of the Road steps out with his easy-going jazzy walk. The opening is set in 7/4, which might seem extreme, but the steady tempo makes it more easy to handle, with occasional forays into simpler compound times (6/8). The xylophone (or marimba) solo adds a more comedic element to the king's swagger as he patrols his domain.
4. Totus Finis (It's all over)
The final movement returns more to the opening with dramatic rolling lines in the lower band, with frenetic fanfares on the cornets and trombones. The rolling quavers are a transformation of the original motive. Imagine, if you will, the four horsemen riding to the apocalypse. The dotted quarter motif is a re-statement of the original motif in dramatic and terrifying form, calling up images of the Dies Irae. Ast letter D, the mood changes for a brief moment as a moment of hope appears through the gloom, but it is only a moment before the rolling theme returns with more prominent layers of fanfares before the last second triumph of hope as the theme from letter D returns to win the day.
