The linguists tell us that the word Toccata came from the verb Toccare, meaning to touch. So a Toccata is a " touch" piece, used to display technique. The pedal part is important, and it should be recognizable as the melody for that stirring hymn celebrating the Triune God. In other words, play the right pedal notes! For the first four pages the hands will be playing broken chords. The right-hand thumb should locate the lower first note of the triplets, and the left-hand thumb should find the upper first note of each triplet. It may be hard initially to play the two middle notes of each triplet together, and particularly for the left hand, but a little slow practice should soon lead to mastery. We suggest that you circle the places where the triplet figures are different for the last two beats of a measure.
