As a piano composer, I am always intrigued by the patterns that the keyboard presents for creative opportunities to ELIMINATE possibilities, rather than drowning in the Sea of Endless Possibility! So, here is a toccata, a keyboard showpiece, that uses mirroring, symmetry, intervallic equivalencies and contrary motion to create music for the piano by process of elimination rather than inclusion. The left hand is ALWAYS on the strong beats, and the right hand acts as an overtone or afterthought to each note that precedes it in the bass. The keys of G minor and Ab major are interwoven. If your left hand just played a black key, your right hand is about to play the same color key! The final section uses similtaneous R-L motion at double the rhythmic values. Opening and closing chords make for a powerful opening and closing to an active, dynamic piece. Approx duration 3 mins, 30 secs.
