In the 1980s I read Dee Brown's gripping non-fiction book, Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee (1970).  His words motivated me to write this short sonata.

Some of the music is based upon two of the themes that Brown's book includes as illustrations of American Indian culture.  Both themes are from the Bureau of American Enthnology Collection:  "Prancing They Come", and "Sun Dance Chant".  The former theme and another of my own are interwoven in a fughetta sectiion.

In this work, I aimed to merge Native American music with a traditional European style of composing.

I was fortunate to witness the premiere performance of this sonata by Carl Banner, Washington Musica Viva, in Washington, D.C. on April 24, 2004.

In 2005 it appeared in the album Solitando, performed and recorded by Mariano Castro in Buenos AiresThe audio sample is the first minute of this recording.

Special Request of Anonymous
Dear Anonymous,Hi, Im Mike Strand, the composer. Thanks for your review. It may point to difficulties caused by other pdfs from the attempt to scan original scores. I have similar difficulties with trying to print out scores! I apologize for not having the original pdf generated by the music software back in the 1980s. In my case, I was able to print the pdf and the page numbers came through, albeit with the artifacts from scanning (staple marks, page edges, etc.)I have a big favor to ask of you, given your apparent interest in Native American Songs. If you have an opportunity to get a good copy and try my piece, write another review concerning your opinion of the music itself. On the other hand, if getting a reasonable copy of my work is impossible from this web site, please let me know your address, and I will mail you a hardcopy for you to review! I will keep your identity confidential. Thanks for your interest in my To Native Americans!

Great piano piece
A very nice piano piece which I recorded some years ago in Argentina. I consider it very important for composers to can show some authentic native music as we are living on a strange world and sometimes we don't know pretty much about our own culture/traditions. Congrats Mike for your work, and all the best!

To Native Americans, by Michael M. Strand
I was happy to find this, as I needed the music, fast, for last minute performance. The music itself was what I was looking for; however, printing it was a nightmare. Maybe it was my ineptitude, but the pdf was terrible for printing. I wasted so much ink and so many pieces of paper trying to get it to fit correctly. In the end still had to write in page numbers, title, and a lot of notes by hand. Also, I could see the staple marks and page edges on the download, as if it were badly scanned from the original. In the end it was not worth the money for the trouble. I also had bought Native American Songs for Solo Piano, which was really all I needed in the end, and printed beautifully.
