In this arrangement for standard big band, Lennon and Mccartney’s classic hit has been reworked in the style of Neal Hefti’s ‘L’il Darlin’’. The easy swing tempo and straightforward rhythms might look easy, but the challenge lies in the faultless ensemble playing needed to nail that very laid-back groove.
The structure is simple with an opening tutti and a second verse led by the saxophones. The middle sixteen bars are open for solos before the bridge and final tutti fading right down to a pianissimo ending. Very much a case of ‘less is more’, this piece is a great opportunity to add variety to your programme and surprise your audience with a new take on an old favourite.
