Popular festival march arranged for flute ensemble. Thunder and Blazes is also known as "Entry of the Gladiators" which was originally composed in 1897 by the world renouned composerJulius Fucik. He originally titled the piece as 'Grande Marche Chromatique' reflecting the piece to all of the chromatic scales weaved throughout his piece but decided later to change the titile based closer to his interests in the Roman Empire. Julius Fucik was also a part of a military band and was one of the military band leaders of the Austro Hungarian Army. This march is subdivided into three parts. The first part contains the melody that the trumpets keep playing along with many supporting parts. The second part is the low brass section with mainly tubas, they take over in the second section with the melody with the chromatic scaler effect The trio section is very similar to the second part and follows the chromatic scaler sound. The piece is written in cut time but is always played in standard march tempo. This march shows off the start of the art in playing technology and the construction of brass instruments, in turn allows fast and even chromatic gears in all instruments and positions. Fucik was so facsinated by the ideas of a gladiator appearance in a Roman theater in Henryk Sienkiewicz's novel Quo Vadis in 1895 that it heavily influenced him to change the title of his piece. Since then there have been many adaptations of the Entry of the Gladiators/Thunder and Blazes which have been in existence since the 18th century. In the years after 1901 when the Canadian composer Louis Philippe Laurendeau and titled his work under Thunder and Blazes was when this piece gained lasting popularity. Laurendeau's version was in addition transcribed for fairground organs as well. In 1915 the New York Military Band recorded the military march successfully.
