Three Short Stories is a set of three programmatic vignettes. Inner Program fuses a wave-like ostinato pattern with a variation on the sea chantey "Fair Spanish Ladies." Continuum consists of a lively melody and a rolled middle section both performed in a similar contrary motion in the outside mallets. Counterpoint is two adjoining melodies that go through several variations in an effort to exploit the entire range of the five-octave instrument.
