Three Scenes was originally conceived in 2013 as wind quintet for a student ensemble. The composer was interested in exploring how individual voices could move together - sometimes blending, sometimes stepping forward - and how character could emerge through those shifting relationships. The result is a charming set of pieces that have immediately accessible appeal, and possibly a touch of the "Bridgertons" about them!

I. Morning on the Crescent
The opening feels like the start of a lively day - a sense of movement already underway, as if the world is waking up around you. The music is bright and energetic, with ideas passing lightly between the instruments, each stepping forward before blending back into the ensemble, There’s a playful undercurrent, but also a sense of anticipation - like small moments unfolding within a busy, elegant setting. The rising and falling lines keeping everything buoyant and gently flowing.
2. Moonlight in the Garden
The second movement moves into a more intimate and reflective space. Here, I wanted to create a feeling of stillness and closeness - as though everything has quietened, and the smallest gestures carry meaning.
The instruments feel more connected, almost as if they are in conversation, echoing and responding to one another. There’s a softness to the music, but also a sense of something unspoken, giving it a slightly fragile, suspended quality - like a moment held in time.
3. Gossip on the Harbour
The final movement brings a return of energy, but with a sharper, more playful edge. I imagined something animated and a little mischievous - quick exchanges, overlapping voices, and a sense of stories being shared and passed along.
The rhythms feel more driven, and the interplay between the instruments becomes more immediate and livelier. There’s a momentum that carries the music forward, building towards a bright and spirited ending, as everything comes together in a final flourish.
