Three Canons by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
for three soprano or three tenor recorders
1. Canon K.229 Sie ist dahin (She is gone)
In 1787, Mozart wrote a musical canon, or funeral song, to commemorate the death of his pet starling ‘Star’. In 1784 he had transcribed a melody Star had sung, which happened to be very similar to the opening bars of the third movement of his Piano Concerto No. 17 in G, K. 453, written only a few weeks earlier. Starlings are known to be excellent at vocal mimicry, and it’s likely that Mozart taught the bird to sing this tune.
When Star died, Mozart held an elaborate funeral procession where everyone who could sing had to join in, heavily veiled, and perform the canon he had written in the bird’s honour.
