Josip Slavenski est né en Croatie et a passé la dernière partie de sa vie à enseigner la composition à l'Académie de Belgrade. Il est considéré comme l'un des pionniers de la musique contemporaine du XXᵉ siècle dans les Balkans. Three Balkan Pieces est une sélection de quelques-unes de ses premières pièces pour piano, révélant une forte influence de Bartók et de Kodály, qui furent ses professeurs à Budapest. L'arrangement pour deux guitares utilise une grande variété de timbres donnant à la musique une qualité brute et folklorique, conformément à l'intention du compositeur.

Josip Slavenski was born in Croatia and spent the latter part of his life teaching composition at the Belgrade Academy. He is considered one of the pioneers of 20th-century contemporary music in the Balkans. Three Balkan Pieces is a selection from some of his earlier piano pieces, showing much influence of Bartók and Kodály, who were his teachers in Budapest. The arrangement for two guitars uses a wide variety of timbres that gives the music a raw, folk quality, which was the composer's intention.
