'This Subject Is To Be Determined' was originally devised for a percussion workshop at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2022. The piece is dedicated to the workshop participants and the workshop leader Chris Brannick. It is similar to an earlier piece from 2019: ‘The Count of Multiple Choices’.
The score consists of a sequence of seventy-five numbers (the numbers 2, 3 and 4) and the performers are asked to devise a musical interpretation. Interpretation suggestions are given which the performers can choose to observe or alternately choose to devise something new.
