Released on the 1997 EP Gospel Oak Spillwords, it became one of the most quietly devastating pieces in her catalog — and in 2009, O'Connor donated it to GEMS (Girls Educational and Mentoring Services), where Mary J. Blige recorded a new version to benefit survivors of child sex trafficking. Sinead-oconnor The song's premise — that any of us can choose to mother another soul — makes it extraordinary in a men's chorus context. This TTBB setting, accompanied only by piano, asks singers to strip away every choral convention except the one that matters most: pure, unadorned voice in service of something achingly true.
