Sinéad O'Connor wrote "This Is To Mother You" from a place of radical personal inversion: raised in an abusive household by a mother she described as deeply damaging, she wrote a song offering the unconditional maternal love she herself had never received. Released on the 1997 EP Gospel Oak Spillwords, it became one of the most quietly devastating pieces in her catalog — and in 2009, O'Connor donated it to GEMS (Girls Educational and Mentoring Services), where Mary J. Blige recorded a new version to benefit survivors of child sex trafficking. Sinead-oconnor The song's premise — that any of us can choose to mother another soul — makes it extraordinary in a men's chorus context. This TTBB setting, accompanied only by piano, asks singers to strip away every choral convention except the one that matters most: pure, unadorned voice in service of something achingly true.
